McDonald's has set its sights on opening a new restaurant in Ross-on-Wye.

The global chain said on Tuesday that it wanted to build a restaurant in Gloucester Road, near the roundabout where the A40 meets the A49.

Plans are currently going through the application process with Herefordshire Council, and here's what we know so far.

What has McDonald's said?

McDonald's said that it had submitted an application for a new drive-thru restaurant in Ross-on-Wye.

The application for the building itself is not on Herefordshire Council's planning portal yet, but four applications for advertising consent are.

It said it was "excited" to be progressing and believe a new McDonald's would bring "significant investment" to the local community.

How many jobs will be created?

The spokesperson went onto say that as well as the additional investment, it would also bring "at least 65 new jobs".

Burger King recently opened nearby at the services on the A449, with KFC, Greggs and Subway also at the site.

What do current plans show?

The only plans on Herefordshire Council's website at the moment are for advertising consent – with a variety of signs wanted by McDonald's.

It wants freestanding totem signs at the south and north-west of the site, six fascia signs, three booth lettering signs and one 15 inch digital booth screen, as well as various signage for the car park.

When will the new restaurant open?

There is no timeframe as yet to when a restaurant could open, with planning consent yet to be given by Herefordshire Council.

Once full plans for the new building appear on the council's website, people will have the opportunity to comment on the proposals.

After consultation, it will then be decided by Herefordshire Council whether the development can go-ahead.

What happened to Leominster?

Fast food giant McDonald’s withdrew its plans to build a new restaurant in Leominster in 2020.

Their proposals would have seen the Golden Arches installed at the land at Morrison’s car park off Baron’s Cross road developed.

But bosses pulled the two-storey drive-thru scheme after two years in the planning system.

But, the American company said at the time it was committed to the town and would work with Herefordshire Council to find a suitable location.

“We can confirm that the planning application has been withdrawn,” a McDonald’s spokesperson said in July 2020.

“We remain committed to the town and will liaise further with the local authority and the local community to identify suitable locations.”
