A DRUNK man kicked a helipad fire extinguisher cabinet from the tarmac at Hereford hospital.

Christopher Francis Hancock admitted damaging a helipad fire extinguisher and a fence when he appeared before magistrates in Hereford.

Paramedics had been called to reports of a drunk, aggressive man at Hereford railway station at around 10am on June 19, prosecutor Melanie Winterflood said.

But as they took him to Hereford County Hospital, Hancock became more aggressive and abusive, attempting to grab the ambulance's fire extinguisher before getting out of the vehicle and attempting to pull a nearby fence up.

Hancock then approached the hospital's helipad, where he kicked a fixed fire extinguisher cabinet so hard that it was ripped from the tarmac.

Hancock, who was restrained by paramedics while police were called, was arrested and taken into custody at Hereford Police Station.

In interview, he said he had been drinking with friends in Worcester and had fallen asleep on the train home to Malvern, waking up in Hereford.

He told officers he had been angry because he wanted to go home and did not want to be taken to the hospital, but admitted that he had been a "complete moron".

Speaking on his own behalf, the 30-year-old said he had been paralytic after drinking heavily.

"I boarded the train to go to Great Malvern but passed out," he said.

"I was woken on the train and was quite confused. I only remember small pieces of what happened next, but I was drunk, confused, and I did not want to be in hospital or in Hereford. My honest intention was to go back home to bed.

"I realise that is not and never will be an excuse. I completely lost control of myself and I am really sorry."

Hancock, of Worcester Road, Malvern, was fined £80 and ordered to pay compensation of £100. He must also pay costs of £135 and a £34 victim surcharge.
