A FORMER England footballer has visited Whitecross High School to inspire pupils to take up sport.

Andy Sinton, who also starred for Queens Park Rangers and Tottenham Hotspur, was greeted by 40 students before chairing a question and answer session.

He then took part in coaching groups, watched the students play a football competition and picked the player of the tournament.

The visit formed part of the Sporting Champions scheme, which brings top athletes face-to-face with youngsters with the aim of motivating them to take up sport.

"I thoroughly enjoyed being a Sporting Champion and reaching so many young people to share my positive experiences in sport," said Andy.

"I hope that they continue with their sports activities and some might even become our future Olympic champions."
