A DRINK-driver has been ordered not to touch alcohol after his ex called the police on him.

Lee Cook admitted the offence when he appeared before magistrates in Hereford on April 7.

Cook had been stopped outside Hereford's Station Medical Centre after police saw him behind the wheel just before 6pm on March 23, prosecutor Mark Hambling said.

The 44-year-old, who failed a roadside breath test after telling police he had drunk two pints of strong lager, was arrested and taken to Hereford Police Station, where an evidential breath test showed he had 110 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Philip Cornell, for Cook, said he had a 'catalogue of offending' which related to a relationship he had been in.

"Things came to a head and he decided to leave. Unfortunately that lady did not want him to and called the police," Mr Cornell said.

"He had got in the car to go to his mum's house, but he was stopped by officers because his ex had told police he had been drinking. Obviously he was well over the limit, and it was a dangerous thing to do, but he just had to get away and end the relationship."

The court heard Cook had been holding down a job as a groundsman while fighting alcoholism for the last 10 years.

"Since his arrest, he has resumed his medication and has been in touch with his GP," Mr Cornell said.

Cook, of Withies Close, Withington, was handed a one-year community order with a 90-day alcohol abstinence requirement and was disqualified from driving for 24 months. He was also fined £40 and must pay costs of £135 and a £95 victim surcharge.
