THE coronavirus death toll at hospitals in Herefordshire has risen again, official figures show.

NHS England figures show 220 people had died in hospital at the Wye Valley NHS Trust after testing postive for coronavirus as of 5pm on Friday (February 27).

But the five deaths reported today all happened at least a month ago, the NHS daily figures show.

The deaths reported on Saturday actually happened on May 1, December 16, January 7 and two on January 21.

Across England, a total of 257 new coronavirus deaths were announced today, with 73 of those in the midlands.

It means the death toll in English hospital has hit 82,974.

Daily death counts are revised each day, with each case backdated to the actual date of death.

This means some of the deaths that were first recorded in the latest period may actually have taken place days earlier.

NHS England guidance states: "Confirmation of Covid-19 diagnosis, death notification and reporting in central figures can take up to several days and the hospitals providing the data are under significant operational pressure."

Only deaths that occur in hospitals where the patient has tested positive for Covid-19 are recorded, with deaths in the community excluded, such as those in care homes.
