With chip shops across the county reviewed on the site, we have taken a look at the top five, as reviewed by Tripadvisor users.

Hereford Times:

1. Audrey's Fish Bar

Taking the top spot is the family-run Audrey's Fish Bar in Tudor Rise, Ross-on-Wye, with all of its 64 Tripadvisor reviewers rating it excellent or very good.

"Best chips I have had in donkeys years. Great value for money too. Fab chip shop!"

And Ruth H wrote: "For a recommendation all I can say is that we have been eating their fish and chips for many years. It’s so good we dont go anywhere else, if they are not open we go without . For those who love that northern delicacy don’t miss their gravy it’s a real gem."

Hereford Times:

2. Y Pass

This Ledbury chippy takes second place, with 44 out of 48 rating it excellent or very good.

"Just stopped for fish and chips as a local cafe hadn’t had their delivery of sandwiches, so we stopped off at Y Pass and we were not disappointed. Very good quality, hot and fresh, tea and coffee good and a lovely fresh bread roll, all for a good price, which was well worth it. I’ll certainly come back when I visit again," wrote ianandval17.

And reviewer blackdeathcrow praised the range of food on offer at the Homend-based business: "Lovely food. Really impressed with the amount of Vegan options. Reasonably priced too. Will be visiting again."

3. Seven Seas Fish Bar

Ross-on-Wye's Broad Street-based Seven Seas comes in third, with 125 out of 164 Tripadvisor reviewers rating it excellent or very good.

"Today is a lovely sunny Sunday so we decided to make a trip from Wales to England," wrote 896wendyj in September.

"We haven't visited Ross-On-Wye for some months so we were delighted to see our favourite fish and chip restaurant open, we had a lovely friendly welcome as we entered and found our table, they have made a grand job of distancing customers the glass and wood screens were very well made and kept everyone safe, we ordered our usual mini fish and chips with drinks and my favourite curry sauce the food came quickly and it was delicious.

"It was so good to see restaurants open with all this uncertainty going on and everyone wearing masks and hand sanitizing to keep everyone safe as can be, well done to the staff they are doing a great job. We look forward to our next visit."

Hereford Times:

4. Dimarcos Fish Restaurant

In fourth place is Dimarcos, in Leominster's Bargates, with 60 of its 84 reviewers rating it excellent or very good.

"The shop is clean and spotless, the staff are friendly, the fish is cooked to perfection," wrote TurbineJon_12.

"The only down side is the size of the portions of chips, one portion is normally enough for two. Social distancing is excellent."

And Hippo1959 wrote: "One of the best three chippies in the uk. I travel around the country a lot (or did) and I have tried many chippies and this is amongst the best, certainly the best in Herefordshire.

"I normally eat in and the value and service are simply excellent. I have never tried a take-away so I can't comment on that."

Hereford Times:

5. Leominster Fish Bar

Coming in at fifth is the Leominster Fish Bar in Leominster's Etnam Street, with 51 of 57 reviewers rating it excellent or very good.

"We really enjoyed our fish supper from here, which was freshly cooked and red hot," wrote Mattinbrum.

"Four of us shared two large portions of chips, but there was loads left over."

And GarethPearce wrote: "Wonderfully friendly welcome from a chip shop which has a real family feel. The staff were really helpful in helping me navigate my way around Leominster as I’d never been before. As for the food - outstandingly good! Had fish and chips the first time. Beautifully cooked fish, and delicious chips, with a freshness you don’t always get these days. And huge portions! It was so good, I immediately went back here on my return to Leominster a few weeks later. I was in a kebab sort of mood, and I was not disappointed. None of the normal grease you can often find, but instead a huge kebab, with very tasty meat and a scrumptious salad. The food was terrific, on both occasions.

"But what impressed me the most was the welcome I received second time around. They had remembered me, and it was so nice to have such a friendly and familiar greeting in a place I’d only been to once before. That’s worth so much these days. I cannot speak highly enough of this place. Now planning my next business trip to Leominster, although it’s just an excuse to go back to eat here!"
