A COUNCILLOR is calling for a mobile post office in Dines Green.

City Councillor Richard Udall, who represents St John’s, has asked the Post Office to introduce a mobile service to residents in Dines Green.

Dines Green previously had a post office in Gresham Road, but the branch closed in September 2017 and the building has been left empty ever since.

Cllr Udall said a “large number” of residents, particularly the elderly, could not walk to the nearest post office, in St John’s. He also said it’s particularly difficult currently as the bus service has been disrupted due to the road works in St John’s.

Cllr Udall said: “Now we know the post office is not coming back to Dines Green, I will be writing to them asking for a mobile post office to come to the area.

“They have vans available which can come out twice a week and provide a mobile post office service. I think this could be an ideal replacement and would still provide a service for local people.”

Cllr Udall said since the post office closed, Dines Green residents have been calling for a new one.

He added: “Since the post office closed residents have been seeking reasons for its closure and asking when can we have a new one.

“The post office themselves have said they would like it to open a new post office on the estate and have been searching for opportunities to do so.

“But the application now is for a fish and chip for where the old post office used to be, so it looks like the prospect of a post office is finally dying. So, we have got to look for an alternative.”
