STUDENTS who live over the county border and travel into Herefordshire for eduction will still get transport vouchers.

Powys County Council have scrapped plans to stop providing the vouchers for students attending further education (post-16) courses outside Powys is set to be dropped.

Currently the council provides travel vouchers to students attending courses out of county when they are closer to the student’s home or are not available in county. In a draft cabinet report to be considered by the council’s learning and skills scrutiny committee next week it is recommended that the proposal should now be abandoned. Commenting on the climbdown, Welsh Lib Dem – Green group leader, Cllr James Gibson-Watt, said: “The Conservative group leader should never have allowed this cost saving proposal to come forward. "It was clear that removing travel vouchers would damage learning opportunities for those from less well-off families in particular.

"As the council’s main opposition group we led the campaign against his unjust plans and submitted a strong objection to this damaging proposal.

"So, I and my colleagues welcome this u-turn. However, a lot of unnecessary concern has been caused.

"No doubt the proposal will sadly have already influenced many year 11 learners about their post-16 learning choices.”
