THREE award-winning holiday destinations are celebrating the life and work of David Bellamy after their recent rewards for their commitment to the environment from the botanist and broadcaster.

Pearl Lake at Shobdon, Arrow Bank at Eardisland and Rockbridge at Presteigne have been presented with gold and silver accolades in the 2019/20 David Bellamy Conservation Awards.

Discover Parks Managing Director Glenn Jones said he was inspired as a child by Bellamy's passion.

"David became involved in our industry, the British Holiday Parks Association (BHPA) many years ago and through his work inspired parks countrywide to join in his love for wildlife and conservation.

"I met him several times and he was everything I'd imagined him to be from my childhood when he appeared on numerous television programmes."

Discover Parks has preserved ancient woodland, created wildlife habitats and formed water features and havens for a multitude of birds and animals.

"We've created an impressive balance that allows our holiday lodge business to flourish without taking away the natural landscape and environment that it's situated in," he added.

"People from cities all over the UK and beyond holiday with us and for them it's welcome contact with nature".

The parks are also recognised as 'honey bee friendly' in the awards, run by the British Holiday and Home Parks Association.

In a letter to Pearl Lake, Mr Bellamy, who died on December 11, said the gold award winners had an impressive wildflower area.

"I am pleased that you are using recycled plastic for your decking, so eliminating the use of paints and preservatives," he said.

"Of all the other wonderful projects you've put in place, I am particularly impressed by the fact that the wildflower area on the edge of your golf course was full of butterflies at the time of your assessor's visit. Keep up the great work."
