OUR doctor's surgeries are so important to us.

We look to them so much to see us through some of the most difficult periods of our life – when sickness strikes – and to help us maintain good health.

In recognition of their central role in our lives, we are now looking for the GP practice of the year to honour in the Hereford Times Health and Social Care Awards 2019.

This award recognises the contribution of everyone in the practice in providing a good service to patients, where staff have gone the extra mile when treating you or someone you know.

We want to hear about practices like the Market Surgery, Ledbury.

Melvyn Lockie, who as put the practice forward for recognition, said: "The practice has been through a difficult period over the last two years after the practice leader had to leave, but have continued to provide top-class healthcare with a positive attitude, friendliness and good humour.

"All the doctors and staff go out of their way to provide just what patients need and want, no matter how much time and trouble it will take.

"Without the Market Surgery's positive and helpful attitude, it would become just another hard-pressed and time-limited practice trying, and possibly failing, to cope with large numbers and restricted funds.

"The GP, Dr Rob Davies, is an outstanding example of the attitude displayed by all staff at the practice. He will take the time to listen, advise and reassure as well as going the extra mile by providing prescriptions, recommendations for further diagnosis and treatment, and letters to hospitals initiating the next steps. He does this with great care, attention to detail, and good humour."

The awards, which are now in their second year, will again salute outstanding work by individuals and teams in the health and social care sector across Herefordshire.

The 12 categories are: Care Team, Care Hero, Care Home Worker, Domiciliary Carer Worker, Good Nurse, Care Trainer, Dignity in Care, Dementia Carer, Palliative/End of Life, Mental Health Care, Care Employer and GP Practice of the Year.

Our headline sponsor is the University of Worcester, the region’s leading healthcare training provider.

A series of supplements in the Hereford Times and special coverage on our website and social media will promote the awards and publicise those shortlisted.

The climax will be an awards ceremony in September when the winners and runners-up are revealed, followed by a special supplement in the Hereford Times highlighting all the successful entrants.
