PEOPLE have been shocked by the sight of felled apple trees in parts of Herefordshire.

Trees near Tarrington, along the Leominster to Weobley road, and in Clehonger have been seen either cut down or grubbed up.

Linda Thomas, of Hereford, said: "It is so sad to see these trees, with their blossom attached, lying in heaps and the fields looking like battlegrounds."

She said she was so upset by the sight that her camera started shaking when she took pictures of the trees.

"I'm sure there is a good reason [for their being cut down], but it is sad in a county that is renowned for its orchards."

Nigel Payne said: "I thought the big eco push was to help pollinators such as bees, butterflies and moths.

"So why cut down a massive orchard in full blossom? Surely this could have been done three weeks ago before the blossom, or three weeks from now when the blossom had finished. Shame."
