SHARON Box hit the ground running when she became a carer just over a year ago.

She had never worked in the sector before, but embraced the challenge with enthusiasm.

She was quickly promoted to the role of mentor, and is now responsible for training other staff.

Her efforts have earned her a nomination for domicilliary care work of the year in the Hereford Times Health and Social Care Awards.

She has been put forward by Hattie Hayes, managing director of care homes firm Katherine Harriet, who says Sharon “throws herself into all that she does.

“Show loves to listen to the clients’ stories, shows compassion, love and kindness in all that she does. She is a true team player.”

Sharon herself is full of enthusiasm for her job.

She says: “I am continuously inspired by the warmth from the staff and our wonderful clients. Every day I am surrounded by interesting people with so many stories to tell, and I just love to chat... and listen, of course!

“Knowing that you make a difference to someone’s life by supporting them to live in their own home, maintaining their independence, is a very fulfilling experience.

The Hereford Times Health and Social Care Awards, which launched last month and are now in their second year, will again recognise outstanding work by individuals and teams in the health and social care sector across Herefordshire.

The 12 categories are: Care Team, Care Hero, Care Home Worker, Domiciliary Worker, Good Nurse, Outstanding Contribution to Social Care, Care Trainer, Dignity in Care, Dementia Carer, Palliative/End of Life, Mental Health Care and Care Employer.

Our headline sponsor is the University of Worcester, the region’s leading healthcare training provider.

A series of supplements in the Hereford Times and special coverage on our website and social media will promote the awards and publicise those shortlisted.

The climax will be an awards ceremony in September when the winners and runners-up are revealed, followed by a special supplement in the Hereford Times highlighting all the successful entrants.
