ONE of Herefordshire's great traditions was celebrated in style over the weekend.
Members of the Silurian Morris sang to the trees when Wassailing in Much Marcle.
They were joined by hundreds of others on Saturday evening's torch-lit procession when efforts were made to "awake the cider apple trees" and to "scare away the evil spirits to ensure a good harvest of fruit for the autumn".
Traditionally, the wassail is celebrated on Twelfth Night – variously on either January 5 or 6 – while some still wassail on "Old Twelvey Night" of January 17 as it would have been before the introduction of the Gregorian Calendar in 1752.
