THE last of this year’s classical music evenings from Concerts for Craswall is attracting a younger audience, with the youngest ticket holder to the Craswall Wind Ensemble’s Evening of Serenades and Octets on Saturday, October 13 just four years old.

The younger members of the audience are the result of a concerted effort by trustees of Concerts for Craswall who felt strongly that they wanted younger people to become involved and experience the music.

Trustee and members’ secretary, Julie Holmes, said: “Like many classical music organisations, we have an older audience and wanted to attract a younger and broader demographic.

“People like me got into classical music because our parents took us when we were young.

“We have come back into it in middle age. A lot of people have a broad musical palate and perhaps classical music might not be that high up.

“We are keen to encourage young people from the community and local schools.”

She said there will be at least six children, aged 4 to 12, attending the concert at St Mary’s Church, and there’s an earlier, family-friendly start time too of 5pm, with the event finishing at 7.30pm.

It’s an evening of music performed by the Harmonie and the central work will be Mozart’s Serenade No. 12 in C minor, ‘Nachtmusik’.

The full programme also includes music by Dvorak, Schulz, Ibert and Krommer, as well as a contemporary arrangement of Mozart’s overture to the Marriage of Figaro.

The Craswall Wind Ensemble; two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons and two horns, is a group of talented players with a particular enthusiasm for chamber music.
