A SCHOOL in the south of the county is supporting a campaign for a ban on plastic straws.

The issue of plastic waste has been on the minds of pupils at Goodrich CE Primary School.

And following on from their decision to not buy plastic wristbands for Sports Relief but to sell their own home made friendship bracelets, the school council met up with the Marine Conservation Society, which is based in Ross-on-Wye. The society runs a campaign for a ban on plastic straws and pupils have decided to support this too in their quest to reduce their use of plastic.

The school asked the supplier of the school milk Bartonsham Farm Dairies in Hereford to replace their plastic straws with paper straws but the company declined and said no other school had made this request.

The school council wrote to all of the primary schools in Herefordshire asking them to contact Bartonsham Dairies to ask them to stop using plastic straws.

Pupils, staff, friends and governors have also pledged to reduce the amount of single-use plastic they use.

Having recently visited the Envirosort Recycling Centre in Worcester the pupils are keen to continue their fight against single use plastic and take action to protect marine life.

Bartonsham Farm Dairies did not respond to the Hereford Times' request for a comment.
