Regarded as gypsy jazz royalty, Paulus Schäfer is known globally as one of the most gifted guitarists of his generation. The Dutch Sinti Gypsy is one of a small handful of contemporary world class musicians bringing this particular style of music to the international jazz stage.
Gypsy jazz (also known as gypsy swing or hot club jazz) is a style of jazz music generally accepted to have been started by the gypsy guitarist Jean "Django" Reinhardt in and around Paris in the 1930s. Reinhardt's most famous group was the Quintette du Hot Club de France, which also featured the impeccable playing of jazz violinist Stéphane Grappelli but Paulus Schafer plays with a more stripped-down group accompanied by rhythm guitarist Chris Quinn (no stranger to the Wild Hare Club as a solo artist) and double bassist Arnoud Vandenberg. For Paulus Schäfer it’s all about the guitar.
Paulus is in constant demand across the globe, often headlining jazz festivals or performing theatre tours with his various ground-breaking projects. Le Quecumbar, London’s premier venue for gypsy jazz aficionados, bill him as ‘The best gypsy jazz guitarist in the world!’
“Simply put, Paulus is a true master," says Richard Page, MC of the Wild Hare Club, "expect to be blown away by his staggering virtuosity, his impeccable timing and his humble and warm showmanship.
“While the Wild Hare Club is always happy to provide a stage for the best local performers, it is an absolute pleasure when we can host artists from abroad and to have one of such standing as Paulus appear is awesome.”
Tickets are £15 and advance booking via www.wildhareclub.com is strongly advised.
