SIMON Thomas from Lyonshall Nurseries has been in contact with a useful way to re-use your Hereford Times once you've finished reading it.

He has been growing cucumbers and courgettes in the Hereford Times for years!

His father, Graham Thomas, taught him an easy method for using the paper to germinate his seeds.

Simon said "You put two sheets together and open them up. Lay down the seeds so they are not touching. Re-fold the paper and put them somewhere warm. A propagator is best, airing cupboard or next to Aga etc. and then water the paper thoroughly.

"This is the important bit - cover with plastic. I find an empty compost bag ideal for this.

"Wait approximately two to three days and they will have germinated. Next, pot up by carefully grabbing the seed and using a pencil or dibber make a hole and carefully drop in, lightly firm and then water in."

Simon concluded "Perfect cucumbers and courgettes every time! I get 100% germination with this method. If you sow directly into the pot there never seems to be a 100% success rate somehow".
