HEREFORDSHIRE had more than double July's average rainfall in just four days.

The county has now suffered more rain in the last seven months than it usually does in a year.

Rob Howells, at the Rosemaund ADAS research centre at Preston Wynne, said 102mm of rain fell between 10am last Thursday and 9am on Monday.

In Shobdon, more rain has been collected since January 1 than the yearly average.

David Corbett, of Corbett Farms, measured 755mm, 4mm more than he was expecting by the end of December.

Mr Corbett said more than half of this (467mm) had fallen in the last two months.

Environment Agency spokesman Martin Watkins said that around 80mm fell on Friday, compared to between 5mm and 10mm over the weekend.

Mr Watkins added that staff would continue to monitor river levels and inspect flood defences 24 hours a day, and have been assisting local councils and emergency services.
