Folk roots duo Carmina return to Part-y-Seal in Grosmont on Saturday, September 9.
Led by Pippa Marland (vocals, saxes, Irish whistles) and Rob King (acoustic guitar, bodhrán), the band has featured in its long career many of the top names from the UK/Irish folk and jazz scene, combiming Celtic folk and jazz to create a unique musical setting for their original songs and arrangements of traditional material.
Carmina began their career in Bristol in the 1990s, and since then they have toured all over the world and recorded six albums, two of them produced by the highly-respected Irish musician Donal Lunny. Their music is an intoxicating blend of Celtic-inspired themes and jazz improvisation, woven together in powerful original songs.
Carmina have recently recorded a new album at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios, featuring their own core band of world-class players, some of the best UK jazz and folk musicians, and two choirs. The concert will feature tracks from this album, plus new arrangements of both traditional Celtic and a contemporary material.
Also appearing will be special guest, double bass player Nick Kaçal, one of the top jazz/world players in the country. Nick brings to Carmina's music the great strengths of his impeccable, virtuoso playing and highly imaginative approach. He is joined by Carmina's long-standing pianist Geoff Castle.
Doors open at 6.30pm with music from 7pm. To book, call 01981 240814, email partyseal@hotmail.com or visit partyyseal.co.uk. Ticket price includes a buffet meal, with bar available.
