HEREFORDSHIRE Housing has now enforced the new smoking laws in all communal areas of its properties.
Since the new smoking laws came into effect on July 1, it is against the law to smoke in virtually all enclosed public places, workplaces and work vehicles.
The new law also requires the regulations to be enforced in any shared entrance, hallway or communal area.
A spokesman from Hereford-shire Housing said: "As a housing association we are required by law to implement the new smoking laws in communal areas. However, tenants are still able to smoke in their own property."
It is a criminal offence not to comply with these regulations and there will be penalties and fines for those who break the law.
Enforcement officers from Herefordshire Council have the power to issue fines of £50 to those smoking in a smoke free area and if prosecuted and convicted by a court there is a minimum fine of £200.
