EVESHAM parish has a new lay minister after a service at Worcester Cathedral confirmed the appointment.

Andy Green from St Egwin, Norton and Lenchwick - which is in a combined benefice with All Saints, Evesham and Chaplain to Evesham and Pershore Hospitals - was admitted to the office of Reader by the Bishop of Worcester, Dr John Inge in September.

Readers are trained and licensed lay ministers in the Church of England authorised in particular to exercise a ministry of preaching and teaching.

They undergo a two year training course before being admitted to the role, after which they carry out a wide range of tasks within their parishes and beyond.

Andy Green said: "Six years ago I became aware that I was being called to serve in public ministry and in answer to that call undertook an authorised lay ministry course through Worcester Diocese.

"The course has proved challenging but extremely rewarding.

"I look forward to serving my community and supporting my clergy colleagues and would like to take this opportunity of thanking all those who have supported and encouraged me in all I have done."

Also admitted during the service was Andy Hewines from Blakedown with Churchill and Broome.

This year’s service also marked the 150th anniversary of reader ministry, with existing lay ministers present to renew their promises alongside the newly licensed.

Bishop John said: “Lay ministers play a very important role in our churches, sharing their faith with others.

"I was delighted to be able to license the two Andys to this very important role and also to help celebrate this special anniversary.”
