A TOP performing village school near Leominster has been told it slipped up - by keeping too quiet about its achievements.

Stoke Prior School was "too modest" in its own assessment of itself said inspector Paul Edwards.

Staff and pupils are celebrating after learning that their school has been judged one of the best in the country.

Stoke Prior is one of three primary schools in Herefordshire to be awarded "outstanding" status and is among the top nine per cent of primary schools nationwide.

A report praised "the combination of a rich, diverse curriculum, excellent provision for pupils' personal and social development and the high level of care and support offered to pupils to ensure the quality of education is outstanding."

In a letter to pupils, the inspector praised their "excellent behaviour and enthusiasm for lessons and other activities."

He was impressed by the way children looked after one another, their involvement in lots of physical activity and understanding of how to stay healthy.

Mr Edwards told the youngsters he especially enjoyed their impromptu display of line dancing.

Headteacher Sally McCamley who gained top marks' for her leadership, said: "We strive to go the extra mile - that little bit more - and it's good to have this appreciated and recognised.

"I have been teaching for 25 years and this is the icing on the cake - to be head of an outstanding school is as good as it gets!"
