ON Saturday, Kingsland hosts the latest in its diverse programme of live events and activities organised by local charity SMAAAK, the (Friends of) St Michael & All Angels Kingsland, as jazz sensation Sue Richardson comes to Kingsland Coronation Hall.

Since its inception in June 2013, SMAAAK has raised more than £15,000 to help pay for the urgent maintenance work on Kingsland’s beautiful Grade 1 listed Church.

SMAAAK’s chairman David Thompson says “We originally set up the charity to fund raise for the Church fabric but rapidly realised that through a diverse and lively arts programme, it could reach out to a broader community of all ages and interests. To this end, SMAAAK has run events ranging from talented local band Whiskey River, acclaimed jazz performer Christina Tobin and the sublime PopUp Opera to the ever popular Betty’s Bingo and The Company of Heaven art exhibition which sold over £8,000 of work.

"We have also received generous support from local businesses Border Oak, Brightwells, Hintons Country & Garden, John Villars Wines and The Posh Shed Company. This, combined with the excellent support from Arts Alive, has allowed us to put on top-end performances,” adds SMAAAK Trustee, Jim Davies.

The season continues with Sue Richardson’s Too Cool, her homage to the life and music of Chet Baker, on Saturday.
