HEREFORDSHIRE has lost one of its oldest residents with the death of Major Stanley George Goodman.
The old soldier from Lyonshall took his final salute at Hereford Crematorium last Saturday following a long battle with ill health.
The major’s funeral service took place on what would have been his 102nd birthday.
After enlisting with the Worcestershire Regiment in 1933, he rose through the ranks to become regimental quartermaster sergeant, the second most senior soldier in a battalion after a regimental sergeant major.
He also served with the Parachute Regiment and was later appointed to the position of quartermaster with the Gold Coast Regiment in what is now Ghana.
He ended his military days back with the Worcestershire Regiment.
