A FUNDRAISING event in memory of a Hereford beauty student raised more than £1,000 for the county's emergency services.

Kelly-Anne Cary died following a collision on the Canon Pyon Road on November 1 2004.

Her mum, Danita Harris, was driving the 17-year-old, to Shobdon to visit the teenager’s fiancée when the hired Peugeot hit a grass verge and collided with a 40-tonne lorry.

To thank the emergency services who helped her family, Mrs Harris organised a fundraising evening at the Starlite Rooms in Hereford, raising a total of more than £1,300.

Mrs Harris said: "We held the event to thank all the amazing people who helped us on that horrendous night and also through our recovery and wanted to give something back to them.

"It was held on November 1 which was 10 years to the date that Kelly died.

"My sister Mel Elliott helped me immensely in organising the event and getting donations from businesses in Hereford and Newent, where I work while my other sister Aliza Chandler took all the photographs on the night.

"The event went really well. We had t-shirts made and about 70 people turned up.

"I want to thank everyone who donated, who helped in organising the event and everyone who attended on that special evening."

Local businesses donated raffle prizes for the evening and Mrs Harris said she was astounded by the generosity of people.

Kelly's brother Tom broke his wrist during the collision while Mrs Harris broke several bones and her husband also sustained minor injuries.

"Nothing has changed, the pain of losing Kelly is exactly the same now and it's always there," added Mrs Harris.

"She was studying beauty therapy at Hereford College of Technology but her main passion was singing and she tried out for the X Factor in 2004. She absolutely loved life, singing and her fiancee."
