FOOD AND CRAFT MARKET – This is back at the community centre this Saturday with stalls selling handmade chocolates and fudge, cards and framed pictures featuring local photographs, and the fresh fish and seafood stall which attracted so much interest at the last market. The market cafe will have live music from popular local accordionist Ray Griffiths. The market will run from 9.30am to 12.30pm.

SINGING FOR FUN – The next session with Marion Rowlatt will take place tomorrow, Friday, in the church hall at 10.30am.

COFFEE MORNING – At the latest coffee morning held in Knighton church hall, £185 was raised for St Edward’s church.

Competition winners were Cathy Reeves, Edith Conway, Ann Higgins, Gwen Morgan and Janet Lewis.

WHIST DRIVE – At the latest whist drive organised by the ladies of Knighton Bowling Club results were: best lady Mary Grimes, 2nd Margaret Johnson, 3rd Janice Davies and Jessica Price and lowest Olive Myvil. Best man O Griffiths, 2nd Haydon Jones, 3rd Ivor Jones and lowest Robert Jones. Raffle winners: Ivor Wozencroft, Scott Sharp and Sheila Jones. The prizes were presented by Sheila Jones and Linda Parker thanked everyone, including Shirley Moorhouse for being MC and Julia Watts for the refreshments. The last whist drive for the season will be on May 2 in the bowling clubhouse at 7.30pm.

NORTON SHOW COMMITTEE – Will be holding a quiz night at the Forest Inn on May 2 starting at 7.30pm. Entry is £5 per team of up to four people.

DOMINOES LEAGUE – For the first time in its 34-year history, Colin Evans’s team Lloyney have won both the Knighton Dominoes League and the knockout competition. Members of the team also got into the singles, doubles and super singles finals. The last was won by Colin. Colin Evans has run and played for Lloyney in the Knighton dominoes league for the last 34 years He said: “My team has never won the league and knockout before so this is a very special year for me.”

All of Colin’s team congratulated him and thanked him for running the league for so long. The results were: League winners Lloyney, runners up Beguildy B, knockout winners Lloyney, runners up The Plough A. Singles winner Alan Watkins (Beguildy A), runner up Dennis Allcock (Lloyney), doubles winners Kath George and James Thomas (Beguildy A), runners up Raymond Davies and Bernard Dodd (Lloyney) and super singles winner Colin Evans(Lloyney) runner up Phil George (Beguildy A).

CIVIC AWARD WINNER – This year Knighton Town Council has presented its civic award to Simon Vickress. The award was presented at a council dinner in Knighton Hotel when Simon thought he was there to talk about his voluntary work.

Simon is the local window cleaner but in his spare time spends hours working with Knighton junior golfers and junior footballers. He started working with the juniors eight years ago and has been the organiser for the last six years.

At Knighton Town football club he is manager of the under nines and ensures the pitch is marked for the matches and helps in many other ways. Simon also helps with football coaching at Knighton Primary School. He said: “I am very honoured to receive the award, it’s a great privilege. I want to share it with all the others who do so much work at the two clubs - without their support I wouldn’t be able to do what I do.”

KARATE TRIP TO JAPAN – Karate Instructor Jim Whittington has just come back from a ten-day trip to Kobe in Japan. Jim and a group of others from the UK did a total of 29 hours training and assessment over five days. Jim learnt five Katas including three that were completely new. Three hours of the assessment involved practising the new katas and in the gradings they were assessed on one of the new katas, as well as their favourite kata and bukai.

They also took part in ippon kumite assessment (sparring) and Ju kumite (freestyle fighting) in the old fashioned way with no gloves or protection.

Sensei Jim Whittington was graded to Renshi (personal development). The grades were Shido-Shidoin for leadership and training, Shogo-Renshi for personal development and Dan 5th for physical development.

Jim leads karate groups in Knighton, Kington and Welshpool.
