EVENING OF THANKS - Cwm Harry Land Trust staged an event in the memorial hall to thank people of Presteigne and Norton for their hard work and success in recycling over the last three years.

The community achieved a 75% recycling rate with 95% of households taking part - the highest ever achieved in the UK.

Wendy Toomey who helped run the scheme said, “ The reason this community has achieved what it has is because of the community. It has been a real privilege for me meeting people and a wonderful experience.” She thanked the Zero waste workers and finished by saying she hoped the residents’ work would continue, although their waste collection will be done by Powys County Council. Wendy is one of three from the Zero waste team given a job with the PCC.

Colin Kirkby explained that the scheme started in May 2009 with a Zero Waste grant and Cwm Harry taking over waste collection from the PCC. The Zero Waste project was only due to be for one year but was so successful Colin and James Tennant-Eyles secured grants for a second and third year. Colin said, “It’s a shame it has to finish but the people in Presteigne and Norton have really changed their behaviour in the last three years.”

He thanked the community, the Town Council, Transition Presteigne, the Chamber of Trade, Powys County Council, Cwm Harry and their recycling team.

James Tennant-Eyles thanked Colin Kirkby for the huge amount of hard work he had done for the project and presented the community dividends. The community voted on where the money should go. Wales Air Ambulance received £2,590, Presteigne and Norton community support project £1,158 and East Radnor day centre £776. Other recipients were: Fields on the Warden; John Beddoes School; the Judge’s Lodgings; Mid-Border Arts; the twinning association; Colts Football Club; Little People playgroup; the primary school; young farmers; the football club; the Youth Project; St Andrew’s churches; Wardens Guardian Foundation; Translight community lighting; and the cub scouts.
