HEREFORD String Orchestra, together with associate woodwind players, will be giving its first concert of the season on November 25 in the Shirehall at 7.30pm.

It will be the first under one of this season's two new conductors, Richard Coppack, who studied conducting in Cardiff before moving to Herefordshire.

To celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of Mozart, the concert opens with two of his works: firstly his sparkling overture to the Marriage of Figaro and secondly the concert aria, Voi Avete Un Cor Fedele, in which the orchestra will be joined by soprano soloist Eleanor Bowers-Jolley.

Wagner wrote the Siegfried Idyll as a Christmas gift to his wife, Cosima - a tender serenade to celebrate the birth of their son.

Bartok's Romanian Folk Dances complete the first half of the concert. Originally written for piano, they are based on his collection of peasant music from travels through the Balkans in 1910.

Although Beethoven was just beginning to understand the extent and threat of his increasing deafness, he spent the summer of 1802 writing the exuberant and joyful Second Symphony, to which the second half of the concert is completely devoted.

Tickets are available from the Outback on Church Street or by post on 01568 760633. They will also be available on the door on the night (under 12s - free; students - half price).
