THIS year’s Whitbourne Hedgelaying Contest proved to be a big success.
Despite having to cancel this competition due to bad weather, the subsequent one held on February 9 proved to be very popular, with 10 contestants taking part and fortunately the weather remained mostly dry.
The open competition was won, for the fifth year in succession, by Glyn Arrowsmith for his fine work in the Welsh border style.
The women’s open contest was won by Denise Kirkwood from Leominster.
The Novices’ Cup was fiercely contested by three different groups, one led by the host, Chris Roberts and three friends; the second from Elcocks, Badley Wood, Whitbourne; and the third, which came all the way from Cheltenham, led by Rob Large with Mike Jenkins together with his wife and young son Jacob, who became the winners of the class.
The cake stall raised about £700 for the Midlands Air Ambulance.
