AN exhibition featuring reinterpretations of the sequence of the Last Supper can be seen at St Michael’s Church in Discoed, near Presteigne, throughout Lent.

In 2012, the chairman of the Friends of St Michael’s Church, David Hiam, collaborated with local artist Charles MacCarthy to commission a series of the Stations of the Cross, with 14 different visual artists creating one station each.

This year Charles MacCarthy has created a highly personal interpretation of the Last Supper.

“Throughout the Gospels the preparation and sharing of meals is given considerable importance, and more than half of our sequences include a meal of some kind,” he said.

“Other themes include humility, betrayal and denial, as well as the powerful, unifying force of love”.

Artists exhibiting are Julienne Braham, Nick Bush, Simon Dorrell, Lois Hopwood, Xavier Hughes, Charles MacCarthy, Dan MacCarthy, Tania Mosse, Andrea Mclean, Alison Neal, Susannah Royle, Anthea Stilwell, Peter Stilwell and Jane Tudge.

All the pictures are for sale, with commission on sales going to St Michael’s Hospice.

There is a catalogue available with a foreword by the art historian Frances Spalding.

The exhibition runs until Wednesday, April 3.
