Western Power Distribution (WPD) is the country’s largest electricity distribution network operator, serving 7.8 million customers in an area that stretches from the Scilly Isles to Congleton in Cheshire and Mablethorpe on the east coast

Bringing electricity to homes and businesses around the clock requires a network of 91,000km of overhead lines, 15,000 pylons, 1,377,000 wooden poles, 132,000km of underground cable and 295,000 pieces of switchgear.

And when high winds fling debris around or the weight of snow fells trees onto lines, it’s WPD’s engineers who are called out to fix the problem – regardless of the time of day or night.

WPD’s Hereford and Ludlow Distribution Manager Nigel Sweet said: “We chose to sponsor the Care Innovator Award because we understand how important it is to solve problems for our customers.
“The greatest innovations tend to happen when people in any industry are determined to make life better for those around them rather than when they deliberately set out to be innovative.”

Like all electricity distribution companies, WPD is working on the challenges of connecting more local generation to its network and meeting rising demand
without affecting customers’ bills.
