POWLES Edward C. Arden, NC - Edward Cyril Powles, 86, of Arden, died Saturday, February 23, 2008 at the Elizabeth House in Flat Rock. A native of Hereford, England, he was a Son of the late George and Louise Tillam Powles. Edward became a Royal Air Force apprentice and attended RAF photographic school. Later as a reconnaissance pilot, he flew Spitfires during WW11 and over China in the 1950's. He is the only pilot to have flown a Spitfire at 60,000 feet. He enjoyed photography, bird watching, modeling, and together with his Wife, rescued many animals during their travels. He is survived by his loving Wife of 61 years, Dr. Marie Antoinette Powles; a Son Dr. David E. Powles and his Wife Jeannette, of San Luis Obispo, CA and two Grandchildren, Alexander Powles and Heather Johnson. Published in paper 28/02/2008
