HUNDREDS of rowers travelled from across the country to compete in the Hereford Rowing Club's annual regatta

Some 236 races were held over two days during the event held on the River Wye and sponsored by local businesses.

Hereford has a straight mile of racing water which led for an exciting spectacle.

Clubs and university teams arrived in Hereford from as far afield as Bristol, Oxford and Keele, as well as local clubs including Evesham and Stourport. Racing categories ran from individual boats up to teams of up to eight crew members and was grouped according to age, the oldest competitor being in their 70’s.

The 500 metres sprint events were some of the most exciting spectacle with metres separating the winning boats.

Hereford Rowing Club’s (HRC) president, Peter Knight, welcomed Hereford’s Mayor, Sharon Michael, who braved the rain on Sunday and presented prizes to winning crews, amongst which were those from Leicester and Keele Universities.

Stu Urry, HRC club captain, said: “I’m really proud of our club members who have worked really hard on this event.

"The weekend was made a success by all of the participating athletes. In 2018 we would love to see even more crews and more locals enjoy a bit HRC's hospitality.”
