A COUNTY teenager has been crowned the 2016 British Moto3 champion following victory at Donington Park.

Charlie Nesbitt, 15, won the opening race at the Leicestershire track before continuing his impressive run of results by taking his 11th consecutive win and fifth double victory of the season.

The teen races for the e3 Motorsport team, which is run by Nick Carpenter near Ross-on-Wye.

Following a great weekend and 44 years in the sport, Carpenter has announced his retirement.

During his time in the sport, Carpenter was a rider before becoming an engine tuner, crew chief and team owner at the firm.

Having won three British Championships running his own team, the final three years saw Carpenter join forces with Tim Walker of Redline Motorcycles and, together they achieved great success, firstly with Joe Irving and now Nesbitt.

Knowing that the Championship would be his with a strong result in the opening race, Nesbitt composed himself led from the off.

However, an incident during the opening lap saw the safety car being deployed and the race was neutralised for a couple of laps.

But once it recommenced at the start of the fourth lap, Nesbitt eased away to finally take the chequered flag almost five seconds clear of the pack.

“It’s been an amazing season, the bike prepared by Nick Carpenter and the e3 Motorsport/Redline KTM team has been fantastic as have the Pirelli tyres," said Nesbitt.

"My sponsors and my family have been amazing all year to get me here, its a dream come true.”

Starting once again from pole position in the second race, Nesbitt held a narrow lead over Jake Archer at the end of the first lap.

However, Dani Saez took up the chase on the next lap and hunted down Nesbitt to take the lead.

That advantage did not last for long though as Nesbitt soon regained the lead.

He then continued to lap consistently to take his 15th win of the season by just over nine seconds.

“It really has been a fantastic season for all of us at e3 Motorsport/Redline KTM and we've all enjoyed working with Charlie this year to help him achieve his goal," added Carpenter.

"I’d like to thank all our partners and sponsors without whom none of this would have been possible.”

The team will be back for the final round of the series at Brands Hatch on the weekend of October 14 to 16.
