THE Combat Academy saw their students do well at the ICO Battle of Wales event in Pontypool.

Teenagers Ryan Hill and Tyler Furnell stepped up to the challenge, fighting in the Adults Advanced up to 65kg category and both defeated their opponents on route to facing each other in the final, which Furnell won.

Also taking a gold medal was Chelle Banes, who had two convincing wins in the Ladies Light Continuous to secure the top spot.

And Liam Gwynne made it a third gold for the Hereford-based Academy with wins in the up to 16 years +160cm novice points fighting.

Hill also took another bronze in continuous fighting and a gold medal in the Sub Strike up to 65kg division, defeating his team-mate Robbie Hearn 12-9 in the final.

Sub Strike is a semi-contact continuous point version of mixed martial arts, where the fight starts standing and points scored for strikes and take-downs.

However, you can also grapple and make your opponent submit.

Aiden Huttel also competed in five fights, winning two and coming third in another.

Other team awards came from Daniel Gwynne (silver in points), Liam Gwynne (silver in continuous), Simon Day (silver in points), Ryan Hill (bronze in continuous), Chelle Banes (bronze in points) and Lisa Huttel (bronze in continuous)
