RISING cycling star Joshua Sandman has made his mark in the history books by clinching the Junior National 10-mile Time Trial Record.

Despite competing in windy conditions, not favourable for fast times, the 18-year-old from Ross-on-Wye clocked a time of 18 minutes and 16 seconds, an average of over 32 miles per hour, on Saturday in Hemel Hempstead.

"I was completely surprised myself by my performance although I felt really strong during the race," said Sandman.

"I looked down at my computer and knew that I had done a fast time and knew it would be close to the record, but I beat it by 38 seconds.

"I now want to get the 25-mile record and have another go at beating my 10-mile record as I got held up on a roundabout and in perfect conditions I could go faster."

After narrowly missing out on the Junior National 25-mile Record by two seconds Sandman's performances have put him in the minds of British Cycling selectors for the World Championships in Austria taking place in September.

Sandman will compete on home roads this Sunday in the Monmouth Junior Grand Prix over 77 miles on the Herefordshire border.

The race finishes in Grosmont at around 2pm.
