KRIS Jones has been elected as the new county captain of Shropshire & Herefordshire Union of Golf Clubs (SHUGC) following their annual general meeting.

The Burghill Valley Golf Club member will lead a team in his first match against Derbyshire, with other matches scheduled to take place against Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Nottinghamshire and Worcestershire.

Last Sunday, Jones was part of a Burghill team that took on Shrewsbury in the opening leg of the 2018 Hargrove Final.

And it is evenly poised at 1.5-1.5.

Leading the way for Burghill were Matt Harrison and Elliott Buck, who left it to the last hole to gain a share of the spoils with the Shrewsbury pair of Tom Kerr and Barry Rudduck missing a short putt for the win.

The middle match saw Peta Lockett and Ricardo Lloyd against the outgoing SHUGC captain Sean McCarthy and his partner Jamie Hancock.

The Burghill pair, who were undefeated in this year's competition, were seven down through 10 holes, eventually finishing five down after a late fight back.

The final match saw Ed Morley and Jones take on Nick Evans and Tim Corfield.

It went in Burghill's favour, with the home team coming out five-up winners, leaving the match halved and Shrewsbury leading by just a single hole.

The second leg will be played at Shrewsbury Golf Club on Sunday, February 18.
