GOALKEEPER Alex Harris said he has never been involved in such a game after he saved and won a penalty during Westfields' 1-1 draw with Coventry Sphinx in Midland Football League Premier Division.

The former Hereford FC stopped denied Jamie Towers before he went up for a corner in the last minute, with Westfields searching for an equaliser.

And as he went to pick up the loose ball after failing to connect with a header, Harris was brought down and Mark Magee stepped up to scoring the resulting penalty.

"We were then in the last minute and I was told to go up," said Harris.

"I went for a header and their fella went in front of me.

"The ball was loose so I went for it and I saw a defender on my side challenging for it.

"I therefore put my body in front of me and he pushed me over.

"Every goalkeeper wanted to score a goal – that is top of the list, with saving a penalty next.

"I have scored a penalty before for Cinderford against Forest Green in a cup match.

"I think that was 10-9 so it came down to me to take one."

Harris added that it was a crazy game.

"They got a penalty and I saved it, so that was a good start for me, then they scored a freak goal," he said.

"The guy cut inside and hit it and I asked him if he meant it.

"He said he didn't, it just bobbled up and he hit the stanchion of the goal."

Harris has also saved a penalty before during his short stay at Westfields, but Coleshill's Reece Leek managed to score the rebound.

The keeper was Westfields' man-of-the-match against Coventry Sphinx ans says he is enjoying it at the club after leaving Hereford.

"Westfields have looked after me really well and I haven't got a bad word to say about them," said Harris.

"It is a drop down for me but I've got to play games and this season [at Hereford] was a nightmare for me having to watch so many games from the sidelines.

"It was really frustrating, especially because I know what I can do and I didn't get a chance.

"But [Martin] Horsell was playing really well and kept them [Hereford] in a few games.

"I played ok against Dagenham but I had made my decision in the summer to leave and I gave my shirt to Horsell.

"But that is how it works out in football."

Harris made a number of fine saves during the first half of last Saturday's game, while at the other end, Richard Greaves and Jamie Molyneux had efforts on goal.

However, after the break, Coventry Sphinx snatched the lead thanks to Ryan Harkin's fine strike before Harris made another excellent stop to deny the home side a second goal.

Ben Miller, Magee and Kingsford Adjei then all came and it was the latter who used his pace to square the ball back to Magee, whose effort was blocked.

Molyneux also had a shot blocked before Westfields finally grabbed the equaliser.

This Saturday, Westfields host AFC Wulfrunians, a side they beat in the FA Cup earlier this season.

Aidan Thomas will return following suspension, but captain Phil Glover and Sam Gwynne still one match to serve of their bans.
