Hereford United 1 Brentford 0 THE Bulls are through to the second round of the Carling Cup after a dramatic injury-time winner against League 1 Brentford at Edgar Street on Tuesday.

French striker Yoann Arquin struck with just seconds remaining to clinch a battling win after United had come under heavy pressure from their highergraded opponents, particularly during the first period.

Arquin’s appearance as a second-half substitute had a reviving effect on the whole team.

He brought pace and life to the front-line after replacing Delroy Facey, inspiring those around him to even greater levels of energy while posing plenty of problems for the Brentford defence.

With seven minutes remaining, Harry Pell had produced Hereford’s first serious on-target effort of the evening with a stinging volley which goalkeeper Simon Moore did well to tip over.

But the goal came from Hereford’s best move of the match.

Rob Purdie, for the second game Hereford’s man of the match despite playing in an unfamiliar rightback position, slipped a pass to Kenny Lunt.

The midfielder found Joe Heath on the left whose cross found Joe Colbeck in the penalty area and he drilled the ball back across goal for Arquin to score from close range.

Earlier, Hereford had to work hard to keep a pacy and hard-working Brentford side at bay, Centre-backs Stefan Stam and Ryan Green were both excellent in repelling the danger posed by Clayton Donaldson and Charlie MacDonald.

But, not for the first time, Hereford had cause to be grateful to goalkeeper Adam Bartlett who produced a clutch of good saves.

Slightly worrying, from a Bulls point of view, was an injury to the keeper which prevented him from taking goal-kicks during the second period and may make him a doubt for Saturday’s visit of Morecambe.

All in all, however, this was a much more encouraging display from Hereford who should draw plenty of confidence from a fine win against useful opponents.
