LOCAL winners were to the fore at Hereford races, with champion jockey Richard Johnson recording his 130th winner of the season.

Johnson won aboard the Warren Greatrex trained Rock My Style in the two mile three furlong Maiden Hurdle.

Making his move towards the second last hurdle, Johnson’s mount responded well and the partnership had enough in reserve to score by a length and a half from the runner-up Sunset Showdown.

Joining the local winners were trainers Katy Price and Tom Lacey.

Clyro based trainer Price saw her Clondaw Rigger take the three mile one furlong handicap Chase in good style, with jockey Ben Poste on board.

Meanwhile, Much Marcle based Lacey has been in good form recently and Colt Lightning became his 22nd winner of the campaign, beating last year’s total already, with a win in the two mile five furlong handicap hurdle.

Ridden by Tom Scudamore, on his only ride of the day, Colt Lightning overcame a mistake at the second last hurdle to stay on well to win by three-quarters of a length from the Richard Johnson ridden runner-up Odello.

A delighted Lacey explained afterwards that the ground on his last run was horrendous but the five year old had enjoyed the better conditions at the Holmer track.

Scudamore, who had to decline a ride in the same race for his trainer-brother Michael added: “I was fourth on him at Carlisle and he has been a bit disappointing since then but that’s a nice win and he’s ground it well."

The meeting opened with Hoarwithy trainer Tom Symonds saddling 12/1 shot Royale Zanzibar in the opening division of the Maiden hurdle.

Always to the fore in the ten runner race under jockey Aiden Coleman, Royale Zanzibar made his move with three hurdles to jump and despite tiring close home, the horse held on by half a length from second placed Nigh or Never.

The concluding Bumper race saw the English debut of ex-Irish point-to-pointer Brewin’upa storm, a £250,000 purchase.

He was sent off a 6/4 favourite and the result was never in doubt as the five-year-old cruise home by an easy nine lengths in the nine runner race.
