HARRY Franklin has decided to hang up his trainers following more than 20 years' of service at Wye Valley Runners.

The 82-year-old was chairman of the club, but has now handed over the reigns to Martin Flowers.

Flowers' first job at the recent annual general meeting was to install Franklin as club president in honour of his long service.

At his peak, Franklin was an extremely accomplished road and cross country runner and still trains from his Black Mountain home and with his beloved club.

Even well into his 70's, Franklin was sixth in the UK male 10k rankings.

Flowers, who is also a former county chairman, said: “I am very proud to be taking over as chairman of Wye Valley Runners from Harry.

"Harry has been a fantastic leader and will continue to support the club as president

"I hope to build on Harry's friendly and inclusive approach, maintaining the ethos of the club, which welcomes all regardless of ability and provides a safe and sociable environment to enjoy running."

Wye Valley Runners has been established for over 30 years in the city.

Based at Hereford Rowing Club in Greyfriars Avenue, the club meet every Monday and Wednesday evening at 6.15 pm and invites anyone interested in joining to contact them at wyevalleyracing@gmail.com
