MARKSMAN Montel Gibson spoke about the ‘perfect start’ in a Hereford shirt after scoring the opener on his league debut as the Bulls beat South Shields 3-0.

The 26-year-old helped AFC Telford United into the Southern League play-off final last season and previously played League Two football with Grimsby Town.

Gibson capitalised on a stray pass and put the Bulls into a 26th minute lead against South Shields in the league opener.

“It’s always good to get a goal on your debut to try and build a bit of momentum going into the next game,” said Gibson.

“I thought that I’d have a go a few times and got my goal in the end.  It’s the perfect start. It’s perfect for the boys and the gaffer and we can only build on this now.”

Gibson picked up a slight injury before pre-season friendlies commenced and only made his first appearance in their final friendly against Newport County.

However, the marksman said being on the sidelines has allowed him to learn how his team-mates play.

“Not playing during pre-season I’ve had time to watch the boys,” added Gibson. “Seeing how Andy Williams and Babos play, I think we have an understanding which I think will only get better.

“With (Yusifu) Ceesay and how quick he is you can leave him out there to do what he does and stay central as that’s where you get your goals as a striker.

“The talent we’ve got in this dressing room is second to none and I think we’ll have a few opportunities per game as a striker.

“I was a bit upset about getting injured, but I was only going to get fit and come back sharp and I can only build on my fitness going forward.”

Gibson added that before he signed for AFC Telford United last season he spoke to Bulls manager Paul Caddis.

“I wasn’t quite ready at the time and needed a whole season,” Gibson added.

“I spoke Paul through the summer, if there was anyone I would make the step up to it would be with Hereford.”
