LEDBURY Ladies touch rugby team came away with silverware after a dominant display with four wins from the Luctonians tournament.

A squad of eight ladies travelled to Luctonians for their second league tournament of the year.

There was quite a strong breeze but the sun was shining which made for good conditions for the afternoon’s play. The late withdrawal of Malvern meant there were only four teams entered for the Mortimer Park tournament.

First up was a Herefordshire derby as Ledbury faced a Luctonians side fresh from their contact season and understandably a little ‘Touch Rugby’ rusty.

After a slow start Ledbury found their rhythm and used their speed to exploit the gaps in the Lucs offside to score the winning points to make it 5-0.

Fresh from their win against Luctonians a match against Pershore was next for the Ledbury women.

Both sides started tentatively trying to create and exploit space with Ledbury striking first. However, Pershore found an immediate reply from a strong drive deep into Ledbury’s half from where they made a gap in the defence and touched down.

Equally from the restart Ledbury drove well and executed a training ground hard running line to dive in to score.

Ledbury’s half-time team talk centred on tightening defence and ‘one on one’ marking. With the wind behind them Ledbury quickly broke through to score a third try, with again a quick response from Pershore, but Ledbury had the final word, winning 4-2.

Ledbury’s final game was against Bredon who had brought a more developmental side due to some of their senior players being absent out on regional duties. Ledbury controlled the game knowing they were facing a regimented and well drilled side.

The Herefordshire side eventually ran out 2-0 victors to confirm a satisfyingly clean sweep win and won the first-place trophy overall.

Cassie Matthews was the leading try scorer for Ledbury with five tries, while Celestine Lyons crossed the whitewash four times and Liv Tubman scored twice.
