WESTFIELDS rescued a well-deserved point as their young side held third placed Worcester Raiders to a 2-2 draw.
Injury problems to Dan Stoneman, Joel Edwards, Sam Rawlings, Adam Newbury, Ben Vine and Kyle Cassell meant Fields’ manager Phil Glover introduced players from the development squad including Zac Johnson, Cameron Davies and Sam Griffiths who all produced excellent performances.
Glover’s side got off to a perfect start when teenage striker Johnson put his side ahead on four minutes with a clinical finish.
The visitors were back on track five minutes later when a mix-up in the home defence allowed Louis Monaghan to nip in between two players and lob the ball into an empty net.
This goal gave the visitors the lift they needed and in the 15th minute Monaghan was again on target with a superb shot from the edge of the box which left goalkeeper Matt Apperley well beaten.
Despite going behind Glover’s side kept working hard and Apperley produced a full-length save to keep out a further chance.
Westfields their deserved equaliser five minutes from time when a Matt MacDonald shot was deflected by Adam Wakley which wrong-footed the Worcester keeper and flew into the bottom corner of the net.
Westfields then stepped up their game and threw everything at Raiders in an effort to gain all three points and substitute Sam Griffiths was not far away with a crisp shot which brought Young to his knees with a fine save.
At the other end Sean Powell produced a fine interception to keep out any late attempt by the Worcester Raiders attack.
Hereford Lads Club suffered their 10th league defeat on the bounce as bottom three side Tuffley Rovers beat them 4-0.
Next Saturday Westfields travel to Brimscombe & Thrupp, while Hereford Pegasus head to Worcester Raiders and Hereford Lads Club host Lydney Town.
The Herefordshire FA County Senior Challenge Cup final between Westfields and Hereford Pegasus will take place at Edgar Street on Tuesday, April 25, kick-off 7.45pm.
