LUCTONIANS produced one of their best displays this season to move into fourth in the National League 2 West following a 40-12 win against Hinckley.

After suffering a shock defeat against Old Redcliffians last weekend Lucs started quickly powering into a 19-0 lead inside 16 minutes and never looked back.

Playing with the strong wind on their backs, Lucs came up with three very different scores. Winger Charlie Grimes got the first, after some excellent phases of attack, before the notorious driving maul claimed another try, this time with Aiden Cheshire going over.

And it was fitting that the third try came from defence as the hosts were brutal in the early exchanges. Rob Bengry charged down a clearance kick which allowed him to dot down, with Louis Silver adding two conversions to shock Hinckley.

The visitors started to show signs of why they occupy a top five position, when they crept back into the game from a Callum Dacey score.

However, a rampant home side secured the try bonus point when the evergreen Mat Hackley was at the bottom of another excellent driving maul, with Silver converting for a 26-5 lead after only 22 minutes.

Luctonians were unlucky not to go further ahead at the half, but Hinckley held on to remain in the game at the break.

Despite starting the second half with the wind in their faces, the home side camped themselves in the Hinckley 22 for long periods.

Tom Smith, in his final match for Luctonians, put in a fine performance against a dogged defensive Hinckley outfit.

However, the visitors couldn’t stop hooker Ben Link squirming over on 43 minutes from another driving maul to add to the home side’s tally, Silver again converting for 33-5 lead.

The visitors responded when Dale Bowyer was driven over on 46 minutes, Joseph Wilson converting (33-12).

However, for most of the second half the Hinckley defence kept the home side at bay for long periods.

It proved to be effective, although Luctonians will wonder how they didn’t manage to add to their score from some gilt-edge opportunities.

Eventually, after nearly half an hour of Lucs dominance, the last score actually came from another defensive set and the ever alert Grimes, who kicked through from a loose ball on the half-way line and his kick chase saw him dot down for the final try with five minutes remaining, Silver converting for a final score of 40-12.

The men from Kingsland have now won six of their last seven fixtures, but finish this season with three tough tests, starting this weekend with a trip to North Midlands rivals Newport.
