WESTFIELDS got their festive run of games off the perfect start as an Archie Muirhead double game them a 2-0 victory over Lydney Town.

Coming into the game Fields were hoping to back-up their 3-0 win at Chipping Sodbury Town before the enforced break due to frozen pitches.

However, it was Lydney who almost took a shock lead in the early moments sending a header over the crossbar.

Phil Glover’s side responded and some good play created a chance for Daniel Stoneman who failed to convert at the back post.

However, the deadlock was broken on 10 minutes with Muirhead continuing his scoring form netting the opening goal.

Muirhead had the chance to double Fields’ lead on 24 minutes connecting with a Stoneman cross but seeing his effort cleared away.

Lydney remained a threat themselves and had a chance to equalise on 29 minutes but again failed to find the target with a headed effort.

Joel Edwards continued to have a key influence on the Westfields side and fed a ball over the top of the defence early in the second half for Muirhead who beat the goalkeeper but couldn’t find the net from a tight angle.

Moments later a powerful Adam Newbury effort was spilt by the goalkeeper giving Josh Hunt a chance, but the goalkeeper made a fine save at the second time of asking.

Muirhead then turned provider on 64 minutes crossing for Stoneman who saw his effort blocked as Fields continued their search for an elusive second goal.

Fields were almost made to pay for their missed chances as Lydney had an opening themselves, but fired over.

With 15 minutes remaining Stoneman again linked up with Muirhead who this time put his effort into the side-netting.

The win was secured three minutes later with Muirhead beating two defender before slamming the ball past the goalkeeper.
