HEREFORD Cathedral School had a day to remember as they became the county primary schools football champions.

Held at Wyeside some 28 schools and over 250 children took part in the prestigious tournament with early morning rain making way for conditions which were ideal for passing football.

Split into eight groups, there were lots of closely fought games with many of the groups being decided by goal difference and lots of smaller schools competing well.

In the Cup competition, the bigger city schools featured heavily while Stoke Prior and Cradley also made great progress themselves.

Whilst a rampant St Paul’s defeated Lord Scudamore in their semi-final, HCJS survived a rattled post and a clearance off the line to defeat a brave Stoke Prior on penalties.

In the final, HCJS took the lead in the first half with a neat back post finish and defended gallantly as St Paul’s threw everything at them to grab an equaliser.

Both sides played entertaining football but when St Paul’s missed a late penalty, HCJS were able to see the game out and became the first school to win the trophy three times.

In the Bowl competition, last year’s champions Brockhampton came out top in a five-team mini league.

Meanwhile, in the Plate competition, it was HCJS B who defeated Kingsland 1 – 0 to make it a double delight for the city school.
