A TALENTED Hereford youngster took of the best triathletes in his age category from across the country and came away with victory.

Local Halo sports foundation supported athlete Henry White secured victory in the recent British Triathlon Super Series Grand Final in Sunderland.

White was competing as a Tristar 3 category for youngsters aged 13-14 year and was representing the West Midlands IRC (inter-regional championships) team.

The IRC's bring together the best young triathletes in the country, each of the 13 regions qualifies four boys and four girls in each age category.

White’s event consisted of a 300-metre sea swim followed by a three-kilometre cycle and finishing with a 1.25km run.

The format of the racing was two qualifying heats with the top-10 in each heat going forward to the A final.

White raced his heat in a controlled style and finished second comfortably securing a place in the A final.

The A final would feature some very close racing. White exited the swim in fourth position and after a good transition to the bike leg he bridged up to the leaders.

During the bike leg the lead group swelled to six competitors who stayed together to the second transition.

White exited the second transition in third and quickly moved to second in the opening stages of the run.

The run which was on an out and back course along the Roker Beach seafront saw the Hereford youngster catch and overtake the leader with about 800 metres to go to the finish.

White’s strong running enabled him hold off the chasers to the finish line giving him the win and British TS3 title.

Training with the Hereford Ghost Runners, White has been taking the local running scene by storm winning a host of events for his age category over various distances.

Hereford Ghost Runners structured training sessions for all abilities take place every Monday at 6.30pm at Hereford’s Halo Athletics Track.
