FORMER Hereford striker John Mills scored early but could not deny Westfields a 3-1 home win over Royal Wootton Bassett.

Mills, who scored 140 goals in three season at Hereford, also played at Westfields on loan.

The striker came back to haunt his former side with only five minutes on the clock when he seized on a right-wing cross and neatly side-stepped the Westfields defence and slotted home past Ian Havard to give Royal Wootton Bassett a dream start.

However, Phil Glover's side came back into the game with Josh Hunt and new signing Keanu Cooper both going close.

Hunt eventually put the sides level just before the break when he was on hand to seize an opportunity for his 19th goal of the season from close range.

After the break Westfields stepped up their attack and went ahead in the 75th minute with a blistering goal from Jamie Bird who went on an excellent run, beating two defenders before unleashing a fine right-foot shot into the top corner of the net to give Westfields the lead.

This was just the impetus that Glover's side wanted but Royal Wootton Bassett stayed in the game and only good defending by Kane Kahaki kept Westfields in the game.

The hosts put the issue beyond doubt in the 90th minute when Luke Sylvester got down the right flank and put over a pin-point cross where substitute Cawley Cox was on hand to side-foot the ball into the net to give his side a 3-1 lead.

Wootton Bassett still would not lie down and came storming back.

Fields' goalkeeper Ian Havard was forced into a full-length save to keep out a late rally from the visitors.

Westfields now play away at local rivals Lydney Town on Saturday before coming back to allpay.park on January 29, when they play second in the table Bradford Town who are the current in-form team in the Hellenic League.
