WESTFIELDS lost ground in the Hellenic Premier title race as a wonder free-kick by Jamie Bird could only rescue a 1-1 draw at Hallen.

Phil Glover's side visited bottom of the table Hallen on Bank Holiday Monday full of confidence after the impressive 2-0 win over Hereford Lads Club the previous week.

Fields had early chances to open the scoring but Joe Davies headed off-target and then Richard Greaves went through one-on-one with the home keeper but shot wide when a goal seemed certain.

After a goal-less first half the game sprang to life in the first minute of the second period when a poor goal kick by Westfields keeper Ian Havard found striker Dawid Regula who came through unchallenged and finished his opportunity to give Hallen the lead.

Fields had to reshuffle their team when Sam Rawlings was injured in the first half and then manager Glover replaced Greaves with substitute Jamie Bird.

Bird had an immediate impact in the 70th minute firing a free-kick home from 35 yards out into the top corner.

Westfields searched for a winner and Bird was unlucky when he turned well in the box but his shot flew inches wide before seeing another effort brilliantly saved.

Hallen maintained their form as well and it was only timely tackles by Kane Kahaki and Luke Sylvester that prevented further opportunities for the home side on a heavy pitch.

Westfields threw everything forward in the final minutes to get the win that they so desperately wanted but they could not capitalise on a number of good free-kick opportunities and corner kicks and had to settle for a point.

Westfields are at home to Westbury United on Saturday.
